Eric Twiname Youth & Junior Team Racing championship.

We will again be sending teams to the ET event which will be held at Oxford S.C. on 13th/14th October 2018. The Junior event (under 16 on 1/9/18) is sailed in Fevas with a two boat format and the Youth event (under 19) is sailed in Fireflies with three boats per team. Our teams performed very strongly last year and the Team Racing Committee will be running a series of selection events in the coming months to give everyone the chance to shine and stake a claim to a place in a team, if not this year then perhaps the next. The first event for potential Feva sailors will be on this coming Sunday 22 July – we appreciate that this is short notice, so the intention is to provide an opportunity for everyone to familiarise themselves with what subsequent formal selection sessions will be like.

There is Lake racing in the morning, so we will start with a briefing (changed ready for sailing, please) at 1400. David Taylor, Chair of the club Team and Match Racing Committee will provide the provisional dates for future selection events for the ET (including those for potential Youth team sailors) and explain the Club’s general approach to team selection for this and other events. On the water, the session will involve a mixture of short windward/leeward fleet races (to observe start line strategy, acceleration off the line, up and downwind performance, mark rounding strategy) and some short umpired team races (to observe team skills and awareness, rule knowledge and observance). It is expected that participants will already be confident about helming or crewing in a competitive fleet race in any class, but no previous experience of team racing is required.  We will by the end of the selection process be looking to have 6 Feva helms and 6 crews plus a couple of reserves to allow us to enter 3 Two Boat teams.

Although the immediate objective of such sessions is team selection, the longer term aim is to help people develop skills for the future, either in team racing or that can be carried over to fleet racing. We also want all WKSC junior and youth sailors to get a glimpse of the huge amount of excitement and fun that is to be found within team racing, with its level playing field of identical boats that are provided for you.
