IOCA Winter Championships 2017, Datchet Water SC

7 boats from the WKSC Optimist Race Team made the trip to Datchet to uphold the junior sailing credentials of the Club at a national regatta in an ISAF class. Junior Members Drew Gibbons, George Creasy, Freya Sewell, David Bromilow, Patrick Bromilow, Max Ewing and George Colquitt. It was good to see so many sailors from the club at a national event in main fleet.

Saturday was cold but the winds filled in for 5 races on the reservoir overlooking Windsor castle. The SI’s had set the tone with no discards and shorter beats and courses due to the reduced water level at the reservoir. The class does field rather large fleets and with over 140 boats in main fleet the level of competition was high. Drew started his Saturday with a bullet and ended Saturday in the lead. Freya also had a good Saturday with a 2nd in her fourth race. She worked hard on her starts and at the end of day one was in the top 20.

Sunday was still bitterly cold with slightly lighter winds. David Bromilow managed to put some good scores in on Sunday; 8,8 and 6, which more than made up for Saturday. Patrick was working on putting his training into practice and quietly stood mid fleet at the end of the weekend. With no discards consistency was key, both Max and George Colquitt posted top 10 races but were unable to keep higher numbers at bay.

The main story of the weekend was Drew keeping his head and posting consistency to win the Regatta. Well done Drew.

The other main standouts were Freya and David both in the top 50, their coach will be pleased.

This was a Dads only event and it was good to see them all working together to ensure smooth logistics for the Team. Thank-you Dads! The next IOCA event that the Race Team will attend will be the Springs at RLYC. This will test the helms with strong tides and stronger winds. They look forward to representing the Club at the event and will be training hard this Winter to meet the competition head on.
