Report on WKSC Optimist Race Team attending the Volvo Gill Optimist End of Season Championship 2017 Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy October 7th and October 8th.

The class association has three ranking events a year and it was good to see so many Optimist sailors from our club travel down to WPNSA.

8 boats from the flotilla made the trip.

Saturday saw quite a breeze that gusted most of the day with all the lighter helms struggling to stay flat. Well done to Patrick Bromilow and Holly Wright, our youngest helms at the event that stayed afloat all day in conditions that required hiking hard all day long. 5 hours of hiking and bailing.

The class does field rather large fleets and there is usually quite a bit of drama on the start line, on Saturday however the main drama came from a change of course that saw no less than 30 boats DSQ’d in the second race of the day.

Sunday was warm with lighter winds and it was greeted with smiles from the helms all quite tired from the Saturday. Well done to Drew who saw an excellent 12th at an event when any mistake is punished. Our clubs first girl at the end of the regatta was Freya Sewell.

The ranking events decide the selections for the National and Intermediate teams for the class.

Seven of the helms will be in Fevas at Farmoor this weekend and are looking forward to the fun and excitement of team racing.

Results from the weekend

Drew Gibbons 12th.

George Creasy 70th

Freya Sewell 109th

David Bromilow 129th

Max Ewing 132nd

Patrick Bromilow 156th

George Colquitt 163rd

Holly Wright 177th

The numbers seem high but the non-squad sailors, Patrick, George and Holly all did really well. All the helms have a long winter of training ahead of them and look forward to the next ranking event of 2018, the Inlands at Grafham.
