There is a reason that Fireflies are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year, and the class is sailed at nearly every University in the country, and that is the craic! We love sailing!
The boats are relatively simple to sail but difficult to master, though West Kirby has produced many National Champions.
The National Firefly has been a class at West Kirby for over 60 Years and we race on Tuesday nights during the main sailing season . We pride ourselves as being the glue between the junior classes and the senior classes, we welcome openly younger sailors as crews and also get shown how to do it every now and then… Actually most of the time!
Personal Handicap:We have been trialling a personal handicap system and it appears to be working quite well so far!The race within the race that everyone is talking about with personal handicaps as below for the next race on the 5th July Jon and Tom Hayley have recently stormed into the lead evidence of their steady improvement over the year. Chris Kameen and James Colquitt got the quadruple last week of scratch and handicap wins which has finished off any chance he had of being in the chocolates!
Alex Colquitt: 4 Minutes
Chris Kameen: Scratch
Jon Hayley: 6 minutes
Octavia Owen: 2 minutes
Marian Armstrong: 5 minutes
Tom James: 5 minutes
Ruby Riggs: 5 minutes
Henry Hughes 4 minutes
Jonny Cross: 5 minutes
Jamie Marston: 6 minutes
Lee Matthews: 6 minutes
Hannah Owen: 7 minutes
Any new person to the class is automatically given a 6 minute handicap… Rules can be found here WestKirbyFireflyPersonalHandicap
Handicaps change each week, but only for those that sail!
Everyone who sails in a club firefly race gets a 1/4 of a raffle ticket in a national competition to win a new firefly.. this is how many tickets people have already qualified for!
West Kirby Firefly Open Meeting will be held on Saturday June 25th 2016

The (NFA) National Firefly Association can be found at http://www.fireflysailing.org.uk/index.php and we should all be members if we are sailing the class, though unfortunately this isn’t enforced around the country or really at West Kirby.. I’m just going to gently encourage you! Link to the form is below:
