West Kirby Sailing Club offers a unique range of sailing experiences taking full advantage of both the Marine Lake and the Dee Estuary. Our members sail a range of dinghies and tidal classes that cover the whole spectrum from state of the art to traditional.
Our members sail in a number of well know dinghy classes such as albercores etc etc. Dinghy racing takes place every weekday evening in the summer and weekends all year round. In addition to racing for individual classes we also offer handicap racing where different classes can sail with and against each other. New members will receive advice about the different types of dinghy available and will be helped to make the right decision to meet their sailing needs. Boat ownership is not essential since there are plenty of crewing opportunities to sail with other members.
We have three long established tidal classes which range from the Star Class dating from the early 20th Century to the Falcon and Hilbre Classes which were designed in the 1950’s especially to sail on the Dee Estuary. Our tidal classes are usually sailed by crews of 3 or 4 people, thus offering great crewing opportunities for all ages and abilities.
Unlike match racing which is boat on boat, team racing involves teams or two or three boats racing against each other and combining their scores. This fast paced, short racing is exhilarating and perfect for improving boat handling and boat speed. Boats are provided for team racers to ensure they are equally matched and everyone is on a level playing field. West Kirby is known throughout the world as the home of team racing, attracting sailors from local universities to race against members our team racing squad.
Sailing is a skill for life. Fact.
